I think there can be no more appropriate time to play, to hear, or to issue a CD of Olivier Messiaen's work entitled Quartet for the End of Time, than now: now, when Europe is experiencing the aggressive attack by the armed forces of Russia and Putin's regime on the free autonomous Ukraine. We find ourselves in the time of a war that once again is dramatically changing the world. Messiaen wrote this apocalyptic composition while he was held in a prisoner of war camp, during World War II. And probably he was experiencing fear, disillusion and grief, and living in existential distress, much like the Ukrainian people today.
