about

We are glad to be part of new and inspiring ideas coming to life. Common Playgrounds had promised connec- tions on several levels – musical as well as interpersonal. Slovak folk songs and riddles, modern jazz, string quartet, choir – these fusions are familiar to us at Konvergencie festival, we seek such convergences. We combine to create something new.
And all this came true at the festival Konvergencie – the superbly performed concert had such a fine atmosphere, that we have decided to transfer this experience further on this CD. We believe that this music will bring you joy in the same way we had a chance to enjoy it at the Old Town Hall in September 2022.

The melodies of Slovak children’s folk songs have fascinated me ever since I was a little child. It is wonderful how they manage to transmit emotions and moments “preserved” from our first memories to the present day. Their power enraptured me, and I told myself that if I can feel it, then perhaps there’s someone else who could
experience it similarly…

The very first impulse to arrange children’s songs came while I was still at university, when at harmony lessons we were set the task of harmonising any melody we liked: I chose Prší prší (“It’s Raining, It’s Raining”). I was very pleased with the result. Later on, when I began teaching, I returned to songs more and more.

I loved improvising and creating more complex harmonies and rhythms for the songs. Ultimately, an entire cycle of instrumental pieces gradually grew from this, and I arranged them for my then emerging jazz quintet Tibor Feledi Kairos Quintet. It resulted in the album Common Playgrounds. We played the music from it at numerous concerts, and eventually we won the Radio_Head Awards for our recording in 2018, in the category Jazz Album of the Year.

Some years went by, and then I happened to be at a concert of a children’s choir, conducted by Adrian Kokoš. It occurred to me then that it would be fine to hear the children’s choir sing my arrangements. I put the proposal, they liked the idea, and this led to collaboration. And yet more: I had always been attracted by the idea of writing a string quartet, so I have taken the opportunity.

about

Konvergencie Chamber Music Festival Bratislava, Slovakia

Konvergencie is about coming closer. Chamber music has to do with convergence and communication: between the artists and between performers and the public. It is like a conversation which, once commenced, doesn't end but keeps on developing. Listening to chamber music, just like communication, develops the human being inwardly: our sensitivity to the world, to the others, and to our own selves. ... more
