It means a lot to me that we have been able to organise a concert at Konvergencie Festival 2022 where the Russian pianist Alexei Lubimov played works by his Ukrainian friend Valentin Silvestrov. This combination is an expression of our attitude towards the war, hatred and violence that is happening in Ukraine. We are convinced that freedom, friendship and respect are the values upon which a well-functioning society stands. The concert was an exceptionally powerful experience, and we have decided to preserve it for future generations. Music has the power to combine the seemingly incompatible and teaches us to be better. It is a challenge for everyday life. Thank you, Alexei, for your profound interpretation of the beautiful music of Valentin Silvestrov.

Personally, I find it sad that the name and music of Valentin Silvestrov, one of the most interesting and astounding of today’s composers, has come to the wider world’s attention mostly in connection with the recent war. I began performing his music in 1968 and we have been close friends during these 55 years, continuing through the contrasts of his changing musical styles (avantgarde, dramatic, post-avantgarde, naive and finally metaphorical – in each you can hear the very personal, unique voice of an outstanding composer). I am the dedicatee of several important works by him. The music on the disc seems to sound like the music of the past; however, this is a „metaphor“ for the musical beauty of the past which we recall in our memories. And this beauty, with its sad smile and melancholy, has more power than the aggressive force that presses upon the world today.
